Introduction

Cultural Association of the Occiodental Mediterranean
MED-OCC

Since its creation, more than 15 years ago, MED-OCC Organization has had the conviction that there is a multitude of artistic and cultural af nities among the contemporary creators from different countries, despite their mutual lack of awareness. Thus, the need to look for spaces of permanent exchange and debate that help develop, inside the eld of contemporary visual arts, the latent cultural connection between Spain and other countries like Morocco, Syria and, now, Iran.

Exhibition

With Miradas Paralelas (Parallel Looks). Iran-Spain: Photographers in the Mirror, we offer the first encounter of female creators from both countries with six couples of photographers, who unequivocally surprise us with their af nities, from another perspective, the look of the curators, Zara Fernández de Moya and Santiago Olmo.

12 prodigious photographers

Which enigmatic force brings together the look of two photographers from such distant countries as Spain and Iran? What internal languages bring them closer through a mirror re ection that illuminates them mutually? The visitor will traverse the exhibition and will discover how the twelve photographers in Miradas Paralelas, prodigious artists, dazzle us, move us, and provide us with an overwhelmingly beautiful exhibition, riddled with disturbing stories and visions. Soledad Córdoba and Shadi Gadirian; Cristina García Rodero and Hengameh Golestan; Amparo Garrido and Rana Javadi; Isabel Muñoz and Gohar Dashti; Mayte Vieta and Ghazaleh Hedayah; María Zarazúa and Newsha Tavakolians.

looks in the mirror

And this certainty inspired us to look for them, to nd them, in such a way that the series that are displayed today in this exhibition, coming from very different periods and years of each of the photographers’ careers, would unveil those PARALLEL LOOKS like clearing in the forest which “shows itself like a mirror [...], a apping clarity that hardly lets something being drawn while blurring at the same time. And everything alludes, everything is allusion and everything is oblique, the very light that reveals as a re ection falls obliquely.... And the colors themselves shine to make light achievable to us. The iris shines...”
And with María Zambrano let these twelve looks in the mirror shine forever.

Couples

Soledad Córdoba
SHADI GHADIRIAN

Soledad Córdoba & Shadi Gadirian

Shadi Gadirian and Soledad Córdoba’s symbolic universe, poetically bonded by the fountain of light, by the oneiric space and the allegoric webs where a woman is trapped: the Iranian photographer’s Miss Butterfly is reflected in Soledad’s oppressive Atelier. A suffocating dream shared by women who long for light.

Pareja 1
Cristina García Rodero
HENGAMEH GOLESTAN

Cristina García Rodero &
Hengameh Golestan

Traditional festivities and customs, weddings, domestic and daily life documentaries: two women, in this case also generationally linked, who have travelled across cities and villages capturing unrepeatable ceremonies. Two women who, with their cameras, have forever consecrated these anonymous couples from Spain, Iran or our neighboring Portugal. Cristina García Rodero and Hengameh Golestan, an authentic lyrical poetry of black and white weddings.

Pareja 2
Amparo Garrido
Rana Javadi

Amparo Garrido & Rana Javadi

Luminous papers and profound colors that cross time in Rana Javadi and Amparo Garrido’s metaphorical portraits. A memory from other time, historical or vital, the work of both photographers is depicted and covered with papers, flowers or fabrics. Is the light of The Window Papers reflected in the images of When You Were Dying?

Pareja 3
Isabel Muñoz
Gohar Dashti

Isabel Muñoz & Gohar Dasti

Isabel Muñoz and Gohar Dasti, linked by the vision of a deserted Iran, almost oneiric, a no place in the middle of nowhere: Bam, captured by Isabel’s look after the earthquake, and Gohar’sIrán, Untitled, look like a space of unreality inhabited by the uninhabited. But also spaces of fight, through battling men that have remained fragmented or strangely united.

Pareja 4
Mayte Vieta
Gazaleh Hedayat

Mayte Vieta & Ghazaleh Hedayat

Luminous and weightless presences move through Ghazaleh Hedayat and Mayte Vieza’s universe: metaphoric pieces that seem to speak about privacy through a natural or architectonic landscape. A gestural look, near plastic abstraction, poetically drawn by light and color.

Pareja 5
María Zarazúa
Newsha Tavakolian

María Zarazúa & Newsha Tavacolian

Urban visions, silent portraits, stories of fragility and solitude. María Zarazúa, in her series, About Eri, speaks of “anonymous heroes that seem endure everything […] the characters are locked up in small spaces that become, for an instant, intimate shelters of an uncertain present, purgatories […]” “of middle class young people who, day by day, fight against themselves, their isolated and alienated society, their lack of hope in the future […]”, as Newsha Tavakolian herself continues about her series Look.
